Beware of ear infections in crowded pools!

Extreme temperatures started and pools in holiday villages, sites and sports centers, are preferred by crowded groups who want to cool off. There is an increase in complaints of ear infections, especially in places where the crowds use pools collectively.

Noting that complaints due to ear infections increase in the summer months, ENT–Otorhinolaryngology –Specialist Surgeon Abdülkadir Kilimcioğlu spoke as follows:

“In addition to problems such as obstruction of the ear, hearing loss, ear pain, complaints about balance disorder due to ear congestion increase during the summer months. In places where sea and pool are used collectively, external auditory canal infection is more common. Besides ear infections, swelling of earwax (the plug in the ear canal) by taking water and clogging the ear creates hearing problems.
It is a very painful obstructive infection caused by water entering the ear canal. The duct skin swells, becomes red, and clogs the ear. The patient cannot move the auricle. Especially pain; occurs during jaw movements and eating. As the infection progresses, the pain becomes more severe. Here, the external auditory canal narrows the ear canal with the increase in swelling due to infection and hearing loss occurs. Fluid discharge due to infection may also occur. When the pain begins, a physician should be consulted immediately. Otherwise, infections in the ear canal will spread to the face and inner parts of the ear. ”

EAR CLEANING, HOW SHOULD IT BE DONE?
Dr. Kilimcioğlu states that as a result of the swelling of earwax by taking water, it obstructs the ear and causes hearing loss, and it is appropriate to soften the dirt and clean it with an aspirator, but washing with syringes is not correct and not recommended. Kilimcioğlu said: “I would like to state that it is not right to wash earwax with large metal syringes used in the past. Because; we do not know if there is a hole in the eardrum behind the earwax or if there is an infection covered by the dirt. If there is an infection, we can increase the infection by means of water, we wash the middle ear and resulting in middle ear infection. I find it more appropriate to soften the dirt and clean it with an aspirator. “
